PRESS RELEASE
REEDSVILLE, PA – Kish Bank is pleased to announce that it has been designated as trustee for the Bill and Ruth Brindel Scholarship Fund. This new scholarship opportunity is available to graduating seniors of Mifflin County high schools. The scholarship fund was established thanks to the philanthropy and vision of a community-minded Reedsville couple, the late Bill and Ruth Brindel.
The Bill and Ruth Brindel Scholarship commemorates the lives of the Mifflin County couple who owned Brindel’s Hardware in Reedsville from 1946 until 1985. Mr. Brindel, a graduate of Burnham High School, was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served on the board of directors of Kish Bank from 1968 until his retirement in 1990. During this time, he served several terms as chairman of the board. Bill Brindel passed away in 2017 and Ruth in 2020.
“Bill cared a great deal about Mifflin County, especially its younger generation, and was a mentor to many,” said Bill Hayes, Executive Chairman of Kish Bank and longtime friend and mentee of Mr. Brindel. “It is very fitting that the Brindels’ passion for the development and well-being of young people has now resulted in this annual scholarship that will stand as a legacy to their vision for the future health of this county.”
Hayes added, “Bill was a leader of our board of directors for many years, helping to guide our team and serving as an outspoken supporter of our long-term goals for our communities. Fortunately, he maintained his lifelong investment in the bank, with Kish Bancorp stock now funding this generous scholarship fund. We thank the Brindels for their enduring confidence in Kish Bank and for the use of our Trust department to oversee the awarding of funds to qualified young people. We look forward to enabling the process that will assist so many, now and for years to come, to achieve brighter futures because of the Brindels’ philanthropy.”
Under terms of the trust, scholarships will be awarded to qualified graduating seniors of Mifflin County High School in Lewistown, Belleville Mennonite School in Belleville, and Mifflin County Christian Academy in McClure. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and must have achieved a good scholastic record and extracurricular involvement. Once awarded, scholarship recipients must remain enrolled with a B average or greater at an accredited college, university, trade school, or technical school. For spring 2024 graduates, a maximum of $20,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded.
Applications are currently being accepted through April 9, 2024, and eligible Mifflin County seniors are encouraged to apply. Students at the three participating schools can learn more and apply for the Bill and Ruth Brindel Scholarship through their school’s Guidance department.
