The Internal Revenue Service has warned consumers of a text scam that is currently being used to trick individuals into disclosing bank account information in order to receive an Economic Impact Payment (EIP). The IRS reminded consumers that it does not send unsolicited text messages or emails and will never demand immediate payment using a gift card, prepaid debit card or wire transfer, or threaten to have a taxpayer arrested.
As the IRS continues to issue EIPs—including approximately 8 million second-round payments that will be issued by prepaid debit cards—consumers can visit irs.gov for the latest information, tips, and alerts related to EIPs.
